Bill pay / Frequently asked questions

You need a personal checking or money market account with Associated Bank. A savings account can’t be used for bill payments.

Money market or savings accounts shouldn’t be used for the optional services within digital bill pay, including Zelle®, external account-to-account transfers, overnight check payments or same-day bill payments. These types of transactions may incur fees, which in most cases appear on your statement as a separate transaction.

No, our standard digital banking bill payment service is free, up to your available balance. Some add-on services within the standard bill payment service have service charges. Please refer to the Terms and Conditions of the Bill Payment Service, the Consumer Deposit Account Fee Schedule or the applicable Checking Product Disclosure for details.

No, you must have a United States mailing address to use bill pay, and you can only pay billers with a United States address.

You may not pay alimony, child-support, taxes or other governmental fees, or court-directed payments with any digital banking service. Please refer to the Digital Banking Service Terms and Conditions for details.

No, at this time, you can’t make bill payments from home equity, premier lines and certain Associated Bank loan accounts. However, you can transfer funds to your checking account from your home equity or premier line account to cover your bill payment.

“Pay date” is the date you scheduled to send payment to the biller. This will also be the date the funds are withdrawn from your designated account. Note: for some check-based payments, the payment account may not be debited until the check is processed by Associated Bank.

“Due date” is the date the payment is due to the biller. If you use eBill and no longer receive paper statements, this is the date that would have appeared on that statement.

The money is withdrawn on the pay date you select when you schedule the payment. Note: for some check-based payments, the payment account may not be debited until Associated Bank processes the check.

In general, schedule payments at least four business days in advance of the expected pay date to allow for the maximum delivery time.

Yes, as long as the request is received while the payment status is “Pending.” Processing time may vary by biller, but the standard cutoff time is noon CT. After that, the payment status changes to “Processing,” the payment can no longer be edited or canceled and we will process the transaction. This applies to recurring or one-time transactions. If you cancel a payment, it will no longer appear on your Pending Payments screen; its status in Payment History will show as “Canceled.”

You won’t automatically receive canceled checks, but you will receive a confirmation number for every payment you schedule. You can use that number to track them in the Past Payment section. A "Processed" status indicates a payment has been sent. Bill pay shows up to six months of history.

When you schedule payments digitally and allow the appropriate delivery time for that biller, your payment is guaranteed, subject to the Digital Banking Terms and Conditions. If a bill payment issue arises, notify our Customer Care Center via email or through the secure message center in Associated Bank Digital. You may also contact our Customer Care Center at 800-682-4989.

Same-day bill payment can be sent electronically to national and regional billers.

Overnight check payments are sent via overnight courier, which includes tracking information and confirmation of delivery. Your request must be submitted by 3 p.m. CT. In the Payment Center, select tomorrow's date, if available.
